The success of Chatham's Recreation Activities
is its volunteers. Hundreds of volunteers annually
step forward to share responsibilities. Some have
the time to take the full responsibility while
others take on an assistant's role. Whichever,
they are critically needed to supervise and instruct
our participants.
Coaching
and Assisting is a wonderful opportunity to
share your time with your child and other activity
participants. It's also a great way to network
with other coaches, assistants and parents.
Of course knowing a bit about the activity is
a benefit but we will take the inexperienced.
There is normally another "seasoned"
volunteer to help in the learning process. That
is what we are about!
At
the start of many of our activities, Chatham
Recreation offers Skills Clinics. Some are for
the players and others just for Coaches and
Assistants. All Coaches and Assistants are urged
to attend these opportunities.
Coach
and Assistant meetings are held prior to the
start of each season to discuss expectations,
rules, team placements, equipment, etc.
Also
offered to all Coaches, Assistants and Activity
Supervisors is the Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. Clinic.
In 1986, New Jersey became the first state to
pass a civil immunity law for volunteer coaches.
Commonly referred to as the Little League Law,
this legislation extends partial civil immunity
to volunteer coaches who have attended a "safety
orientation and training skills program."
The Rutgers Clinic helps coaches minimize the
risk of injury to young athletes, provides information
about fundamental coaching concepts which enhances
volunteer coach's effectiveness and protects
volunteer coaches from civil lawsuits.
If
you would like to share your time with us as
a Coach, Assistant or Supervisor, please indicate
that on your child's activity registration form.
If you have a question about the time involved,
please call the Recreation Office at 635-7066
or 635-3201.
We
would love to have you become a part of "our
team."
